Rhinoplasty
The nose is the first distinguishing feature of the face, located in the center. The nose’s ratio to the other structures on the face has a considerable impact on its aesthetic look.
For this reason, rhinoplasty (nasal aesthetic surgery) has become one of the most popular cosmetic surgery treatments. During the same operation, any cartilage or bone curvatures can be rectified, resulting in a healthy and aesthetically pleasing nose.
What is rhinoplasty?
The nose is the first distinguishing feature of the face, located in the center. The nose’s ratio to the other structures on the face has a considerable impact on its aesthetic look. If a person is concerned by one or more of the following problems with the form of his/her nose, he/she may contemplate surgery:
- Arched nose
- Curved nose
- Drooping nose tip
- Long nose tip
- Wide and wide nose tip
- Narrow nose
- Flattened nose tip
Rhinoplasty, the most popular aesthetic surgical procedure, is performed to improve the appearance of a person’s nose. During this treatment, any deviated bone or cartilage that prevents the patient from breathing is repaired.
The Importance of Nose in Facial Beauty
How should an ideal nose look?
The nose should appear symmetrical, proportionate, in harmony with the rest of the face, and natural. A nice and attractive nose should have good proportions. A nose that is proportional to our face and within itself is essential for facial beauty.
The goal of rhinoplasty is to provide the patient with a symmetric, natural-looking nose that is proportionate to his or her face and functions properly. A lovely nose will help highlight other aspects of the face.
How is rhinoplasty performed?
Types of Rhinoplasty
Open Rhinoplasty
At open rhinoplasty surgery, the incision is made at the area recognized as the middle pole of the nose. The nasal skin and cartilage tissue are pulled from the incision site. Necessary operations are conducted based on nasal functions or nose structure problems; cartilage tissue and skin are restored back on the nasal middle pole, and the operation is completed by closing the incision. Open rhinoplasty is the preferred technique of surgery since it allows for a good view of all structures and produces the greatest results during operation.
Closed Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty uses various incisions depending on the procedure to be performed on the nose, but the incisions are placed via the nostril and are not visible from the outside. Closed rhinoplasty surgery reduces swelling that develops after the operation.
When comparing the two approaches, open rhinoplasty gives the surgeon more control over the interior of the nose, allowing for a more precise reshaping, but the recovery period may take significantly longer. A small scar, however slight, is likely to remain. In closed rhinoplasty, the surgeon’s experience is critical. This approach allows the patient to heal more comfortably and quickly. Furthermore, when the procedure is conducted through the nostrils, no scar is left.
How long does rhinoplasty take?
Although general anesthesia is advised for the patient’s comfort, this operation, which can be conducted under either local or general anesthesia, typically takes 2-3 hours.
Is the rhinoplasty operation painful?
The majority of patients report that they did not experience as much pain as they expected after rhinoplasty. The drugs given to the nose during surgery help to alleviate post-operative pain.
Before rhinoplasty
Who can get rhinoplasty?
Female patients over the age of 16 and male patients over the age of 18 are eligible for rhinoplasty. In aesthetic surgeries, the patient’s physical attributes, age, expectations, anatomical structure, and current health problems should all be thoroughly considered before selecting the best method for the patient. The surgery should be tailored to each individual patient.
Rhinoplasty procedures should be conducted by cosmetic surgeons who take a comprehensive approach to the face and can repair the functional structure of the nose.
Things to consider before surgery
Before the operation, the patient should inform the surgeon and anesthesiologist who will be performing the aesthetic surgery about all of his current medications and general health status. Before the operation, he or she must advise his or her surgeon of any upper respiratory tract infections, fever, cough, sore throat, abdominal pain, flu, cold, or cold sores. Stop taking blood thinners, herbal teas, fish oil, and any particular herbal cure applications one week before surgery. You should avoid smoking for 2-3 weeks before surgery because it has a detrimental impact on the recuperation process.
After rhinoplasty
Issues to Consider Following the Operation:
- Supporting the head with a cushion for the first two nights following rhinoplasty and sleeping as vertically as possible may reduce your risk of acquiring edema.
- Eating and sleeping regularly help to accelerate the healing process.
- For at least three weeks, avoid intense activities or those that require bending.
- Avoid wearing glasses for the first 4-6 weeks.
- For at least three months, avoid exposing the nasal region to direct sunlight.
- You should wear a high-factor sunscreen or a protective hat for this purpose.
- For the first 4-5 weeks, avoid swimming in the sea, pools, and saunas.
- Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking since they impair suture repair and tissue regeneration.
- Avoid blowing your nose in the first few weeks.
Is it possible to do concha and nasal blockage surgery concurrently with rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty can repair conditions that cause nasal congestion and breathing issues, such as concha and a deviated septum.
What is nasal tipplasty?
Nasal tip plasty is performed on patients who do not have a significant bridge, curvature, or humps on the nasal dorsum and whose look can be improved with a simple nasal tip operation.
Tip plasty, also known as nasal tip esthetic surgery, refers to surgeries performed to remedy cosmetic issues such as drooping, beaked, or enlarged nasal tips.
Tip plasty takes little time and is frequently performed under local anesthetic. Following the procedure, the patient may experience moderate edema but no bruising. It has a substantially quicker recovery time than other nose procedures, and the patient can resume regular activities immediately after a brief rest period.
What are the nonsurgical rhinoplasty procedures?
Nasal filling
Nasal filling, also known as non-surgical nasal esthetic application, is a procedure for changing the contour of the nose that does not require surgery. Filling materials that add volume to the skin, such as hyaluronic acid, are injected into the nasal area using proper procedures. This treatment temporarily treats nasal cavities, recesses, contour defects, and asymmetries. It should be repeated at predetermined intervals.
Nose tip Botox
Botox can be administered intramuscularly at the tip of the nose, where it connects to the lip. Botox causes the muscle to relax, resulting in a relative increase near the tip of the nose.
Lifting the nose tip with thread
It is a surgery-related procedure that involves sutures. Unlike previous applications, this method does not give long-term persistence.
Is it possible to repair septal deviation with plastic surgery?
The septum is a mucosa-covered portion of the nose that divides the nasal cavity in two from the center and is made up of cartilage in the front and bone in the back. One of the causes of respiratory discomfort is septum deviation, which is a physical disease of the nose in which the cartilage or bone section in the middle of the nose leans to one side. This tilt may occur in the front or back. The passage on the side where this tilting occurs has narrowed, making breathing difficult.
Plastic surgeons can perform rhinoplasty while also treating concha and septum abnormalities.
What is nose filing?
Nose filing is a technique performed to lower the height of the nasal ridge, typically in aquiline noses. The dorsal height of the nose is reduced to the desired level using the same file used in nasal esthetic procedures.
If the nasal hump is too high, the excess component can be removed at the surgeon’s discretion by filing or excision, although filing the nasal hump area and lowering it to the appropriate level is a more regulated technique.
Can sinusitis patients undergo nasal surgery?
Sinusitis patients have no contraindications to having a rhinoplasty.
Will there be any scars left after rhinoplasty?
The open technique for rhinoplasty involves making a small incision between the nostrils to complete the treatment, therefore a very mild scar is likely to be left in this area of the nose. Because wound healing differs from person to person, this scar does not appear to be uniform in all individuals. There will be nearly no scar after open rhinoplasties performed by cutting at the correct place.
How long do swelling and bruises take to recover after surgery?
It is true that previous rhinoplasty procedures caused significant swelling and bruising. However, due to the use of procedures and technological advancements, they are considerably less common today. Precautions taken during surgery, tampon-free surgeries, and post-operative cooling masks are all excellent ways to avoid or reduce swelling and bruising. Swelling and bruises may occur despite all measures taken and treatments administered, depending on the person’s tissue structure and whether they are allergic or not, and will resolve within a week or ten days.
Does rhinoplasty cause loss of smell?
Any cosmetic and functional changes done during the procedure are remote from the area where the nose detects smell. In other words, no interventions, such as incisions, are performed in that area, therefore the procedure has no effect on the ability to smell.
Only early after surgery will there be some nasal congestion caused by edema in the nose, which will impair the sense of smell until the swelling diminishes.
